I have been on a contemplative path for the past six years. I have a daily meditation practice and am a member of the contemplative body of the House of Prayer in Collegeville, Minnesota. I atttend many retreats there, including five yearly Wisdom Schools with Cynthia Borgeault, Lynn Bauman and Ward Bauman.
I am a pediatrician, and three years ago I began doing medical work in Haiti. I discovered the fruits of my contemplative practice. While my small, ego self was very insecure and overwhelmed, my higher Self took over, and I was able to stay strong, centered and compassionate, and deliver the best care possible, from a place of deep calm and confidence.
Now, after the devastating earthquake in Haiti, I have discovered that my deep connection to the Haitian people is not affected by my distance from them. I know that I am sending them love and energy, even though I cannot be physically presnet with them. I know that the time will come when I can return to Haiti, and my practice will enable me to know what it is I can give.
